- Michael: I hate this type of lingo and am generally pleased it
- is not too common on 2-meters. May I suggest that we discourage

- Left 70cm Yes
- Left 800Mhz No (neither AM nor FM. Not tunable)

- Oh boy! Nice to see all the DOC/Industry Canada people participating in
- this newsgroup. I guess it's about time to bring up my pet peeve.
-
- Why is it that we have to pay so much for our station licences every year.
- Last year it was $23.00, this year it was $24.00. Where will it end?
- Where is all the money going? Is it to pay for your Internet access? <grin>
-
- Our cousins to the south pay less than $6.00 U.S. for a license that's
- good for 10 YEARS!!!!
-
- Couldn't we do something along the same lines up here? Perhaps DOC could
- charge extra for value-added services, like "vanity" callsigns, address
- changes, etc., and charge a lower rate for the basic licence.
-
- Just a thought!
-
- de va3rr (YES! a vanity call)
- also aa8lu (ya takes what ya gets)

- Actually, we don't pay a thing for the license. The $5.xx goes for testing
- fees. So, in theory, you can pay that once and have a license for life...

- Subject: Luck Hurder ... gone:( Why?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I've been following this discussion since it first popped up and
- several points occur to me.
-
- First, yes, I do agree that ARRL management probably has been
- advised by counsel not to comment. Basically, the idea here
- is that they can't be sued for what they don't say.
-
- That does not, however, mean I buy the argument that we should then
- assume there are important facts we don't know and that if only we
- did, then surely we'd concur with the ARRL management action. To me,
- that sounds a little too much like Nixon's Secret Plan. Let's be
- frank: these people work for us. That's why we pay dues. We have
- both a right and duty to see to it that the ARRL is managed well
- and fairly.
-
- I can only try to judge the evidence I have in front of me. That
- evidence is that Luck Hurder was a consistently helpful, enthusiastic
- fellow who worked very hard.
-
- Now, some have suggested that Luck may have been hard to manage, as
- if this might be the "real" reason he's been fired. Well, again, let
- me be frank: that's too bad. I don't care. His managers weren't
- being paid to enjoy life and surround themselves with a bunch of
- bootlickers. As most good managers will admit, virtually ALL really
- good employees -- the ones who can make a real positive difference
- in any organization -- are hard to manage. That's the job. Take
- it or leave it. If you just can't cope with that simple fact, you
- should not be a manager.
-
- Ultimately, I don't give a damn how miserable Luck may/may not have
- made life for his managers. I do care how well the organization
- performs for all of us who are paying for it. And I do, sadly, suspect
- that dismissing Luck is not the way to make it work better.

-
- On Saturday May 14'th we will take a look at Digital Audio Broadcasting

- Yes, you are right, the line goes "a man hears what he wants to hear and
- desregards the rest." That much is true. Works both ways I would say.
- Having read your article I found it seemed to bounce back and forth and
- I wasn't sure weather you were flamming the pirate (as you call them
- micro) broadcasters or weather you were supporting them. Being how the
- article was meant to be said over the air and not in written form I suppose
- speach inflection would have made it clear what side you were supporting.
-
- I wasn't aware that the Class D license (I believe that is what it was
- called) had been elliminated. My old high school used to have our own
- radio station that I believe was under this type of license. The signal
- wasn't allowed to be heard over 100 feet or meters from the school grounds
- as I recall.
-
- As far as this having anything to do with the amateur radio subject of
- this group, NOT! As far as my only being aware of the what is happening
- on the amateur band and not shortwave or whatever, SO WHO ARE YOU To
- JUDGE! Are you aware of who I am or anyone else for that matter? NO WAY
- BigSteve.
-
- You say no one has complained about your column but me. Well I suggest
- you are "disregarding" other peoples comments on this group. I have
- seen some. Take your non-amateur topics and put them on an appropriate
- group.
